Dinner is Served

For those of you who don’t know, I was raised eating food from a can.  That’s no fault of the women in my family (we’ll get to my own mother in a minute), because they’re excellent cooks.  So is Mom.  However, she only cooks twice a year, and you better be present or you’ll miss it.

So when my friend and I were stuck inside on a rainy afternoon last Sunday we watched a certain movie that involved cooking.  I’m reluctant to tell you what it was because I promised myself when the previews were all over tv that I would never see this movie… Little did I know that there would be a rainy day in my future when everyone and their brother stood before me in line for the Red Box machine.

Ok, ok, the movie was Julie & Julia.  There.  Please don’t judge.

In the movie, this 20-something year old girl living in New York wants to be more than just the girl with the dead-end job, and so she decides to cook every recipe from the Julia Child cookbook.  It wasn’t hard to relate to this character, especially in a time when most 20-somethings are struggling to find meaning and value in their jobs due to this take-what-you-can-get work environment (yes, I think this sounds familiar…).

My most-excellent friend and I decided that we, too, need to challenge ourselves with something fun like this.  I’m going to pick a recipe each week (I’m the picky eater-especially when it doesn’t come in a can).  Then we’re both going to cook it at our respective homes and then take pictures, cause that’s what we do.  Plus, I’ve really been trying to boost my cooking skills seeing how I’m an adult and all now.

So here it is – my first dish!  It’s a complete meal called One-Skillet Spaghetti Mac.

By no means is this becoming a cooking blog.  I just wanted to share.  Feel free to go here for the recipe.  It’s a pasta dish topped with a thin layer of biscuits.  It’s no secret that I ran out of biscuit mix on top, but since it’s my first go at this recipe I let it slide.  The added Italian cheese on top was a great choice.

Now, I would like to thank Betty Crocker and Aaron Fisher for making this possible.  Betty provided the super easy recipe after I went to her handy-dandy website.  Aaron not only kept the stove top attended while I ran to the store for Bisquick but he also served as photographer, which completely makes me forget about that wine glass he broke in the process.  Small price to pay!

Knuckles go to Ms. Katy Barrett, my partner in cooking crime who is going to be whipping this up (hopefully with more biscuit mix) this weekend.  Can’t wait to see how it turns out!

Do you have any good recipes that you would like to pass along?  Let’s keep it amateur-level, people.  If I can make it, I’ll report back here!
